Shelley Alexis Duvall was born on July 7, 1949, in Fort Worth, Texas, and grew up in Houston.
Her father, Robert, was a cattle auctioneer turned lawyer, and her mother, Bobbie, was a homemaker. Duvall began her acting career in the 1970s, with small roles in films such as Brewster McCloud (1970) and Thieves Like Us (1974).
Her breakthrough role came in 1977, when she starred as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Duvall's performance in the film was widely praised, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Duvall continued to star in films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Popeye (1980), Time Bandits (1981), and Frankenweenie (1984). She also appeared in several television series, including Saturday Night Live and Tales from the Crypt.
